... we bought a couple of these bags with some of our FullCircles / FEF grant,
and started a couple travelling rhinobags... Maybe we could move "stuff"
from people with too much to people starting out... Or something like
that.

The topic of URL shorteners / link shorteners was raised on the FullCircles Ottawa group this morning. I started this discussion thread so that folks can take the discussion off the FCO group and continue it here.

Yesterday was an absolutely HUGE day for community yard/garage sales here in Ottawa. A month of unseasonably cold weather must have resulted in the sudden release of "stuff" from pent up need to declutter. I was totally struck with the absolute over-abundance of "stuff" in our community / society. In some local areas, every second or third house trotted out tons and tons of surplus stuff. Everyone competing with their neighbours to sell their unwanted stuff. And a non-stop parade of bargain shoppers jamming the streets for 4 or 5 hours. Wow! Freecycle/FullCircles/ReUseIt are just handling the very tip of the visible part of this societal iceberg. This is a monster! Amazing bargains available! I bought an unused 2 speed hand blender for $1.50. This thing was still in the original box and packing from 1998... 11 years ago. I wonder how many more of those are lurking in basements, closets, drawers, cupboards of North America. Then, it's over... And the streets and yards and garages are still filled with all kinds of unsold "stuff"... Stuff, by virtue of the fact it was offered for sale, which has been declared as "surplus".... carion, dead meat, as far as all of these neighbourhood households are concerned. So, now what? What to do with all that leftover "stuff". Some folks elect to put it all back in the house, garage, basement, etc. Get it off the street and out of sight until next year. Others put FREE signs on the unsold stuff and leave it out for another day or so (so long as there isn't rain in the forecast...), and then still have decisions to make. Still others, firmly committed to decluttering, pack it up in the car/van/truck/trailer, close their eyes, and drop it off at their favorite charity.. Value Village, Salvation Army, Women's Shelters, etc., which of course creates yet ANOTHER clutter problem. Sounds like we could all use some kind of asset management programs at in our households. Why not TAM? Total Asset Management... http://twitter.com/egs/status/2064234231 Governments do it. Why not households? Could we adapt this approach at the micro-household level? I think so. What do you think? Eric Snyder Twitter.FullCircles.org ========================

It will be 5 years on February 19th, 2009 since freecycling was launched in Ottawa / Eastern Ontario / Western Quebec with the launch of the original Ottawa Freecycle group. In those 5 years, the movement has taken hold in our region in a big way. 41 different groups with total membership approaching 38,000, and MANY volunteers around the region giving their time and effort to grow, lead, and sustain these groups. Do you think we should mark this 5th anniversary in any special way? If you have any thoughts, or would like to volunteer to develop some kind of anniversary initiative, let's get a discussion going here, on the FullCircles Network Forum on Ning. /e

BBQs come "Full Circle" This great idea was posted on the Ottawa Recycling Café/BB this morning. Thanks Jocelyne. Hope you don't mind us reusing your reuse idea =========== Old BBQ bases / stands are the right height for mounting some woodworking tools such as a planer, a joiner, drill press and bench grinder. Just use some scrap 2X6s, plywood, nuts, bolts and screws and you have a new life for that BBQ Stand. And your tools are on wheels if you need to move them around your workshop. Jocelyne
